This is often a question asked by fairly elderly or semi-retired solicitors who approach our legal recruitment consultancy Ten Percent Legal Recruitment. They have probably worked in the same job for the last 30 years and know just about everything there is to know about the work they do. This is invariably conveyancing or family law or something similar from a small provincial high street practice. They finish their long term job and then look around for locum work or short term contracts.
We explain to them that it is extremely difficult to get a job unless they have provided us with a CV, because there is nothing that a potential employer can see about them if there is no evidence of the work they have been doing.
This seems to bamboozle most applicants like this because they cannot comprehend that anyone could look at their experience to date in a very brief CV which shows they have been in the same job for 30 years, and not think that they can do the work expected of them.
The common misconception is that if you do not have a CV it doesn’t really matter because an employer will look at your length of experience and decide that you are suitable for the post they have.
Nothing could be further from the truth.
Employers want a full CV at all times, and it is immaterial as to whether or not you have been in the same job for 30 years or working in a role for 3 months. It really makes no difference and your chances of finding work if you do not produce a CV outlining all your work and your education and your life, together with your activities and interests, computer and language skills and personal details, are very slim indeed.
Fortunately there is a solution for you, which is to contact us at cv@ten-percent.co.uk and request a copy of our CV writing pack, a set of templates specifically designed to help you produce a CV that can be put forward for legal jobs.
